An envelope arrived today at the Tea Room with a hand-written note from a customer. It said that she had visited us on Saturday, January 28th with her daughters from about 2 to 3.15 pm. She had received great service from one of our “wonderful” servers and she regretted that she had forgotten to leave a tip. With the note was an enclosed check for the forgotten tip. Now, this is indeeed something to make our day. Thank you, Katie. It is not everyday that someone goes out of their way to acknowledge the service they received and then actually does something about it. Your kindness was enjoyed and appreciated. We will pay it forward.

Aiding and Abetting

A gentleman came into the Tea Room today dressed in a suit, ready to go to work. This was 12 noon. He ordered half a Tarry Chicken Sandwich and a pot of Silver Tips Earl Grey. He opened his laptop and was deep into it. He then ordered a pot of Ti Kwan Yin Oolong. Today being Chinese New Year, we were featuring Oolongs so that was fitting. After a while, having finished his Oolong, he ordered Ten Treasures – a house favorite, Green with Cherry and Passionfruit. By this time, a fair amount of time has passed. He suddenly announces to our staff – You know what, I’m not going to work today! He then proceeded to order another pot of tea – this time Coconut Vanilla. He thoroughly enjoyed it and left at 3 pm. Just magnificent!

Happy Customers

We got a nice online order today from a customer in Connecticut – some Makaibari, some Ti Kwan Yin Oolong, an Assam, a brew basket, a few other items - just an overall good selection. Ordinarily, we would ship this via Priority Mail and it would arrive Friday or Saturday. The customer contacted us, however, and said she would be ‘very appreciative of any efforts to expedite this order delivery’. Apparently they were having a party this weekend and wanted to share the teas at the party. And if we had any literature on our company or the teas, that would be great too. So we immediately e-mailed her back and said we would ship via UPS rather than the US Postal service. This way it would be virtually guaranteed to arrive tomorrow albeit it would cost us a little extra. We thought that would be the end of that. But no, we were pleasantly surprised to learn that we made her so happy that she sent an instant message to her friend who had referred her to us and expressed her delight as follows:

Silver Tips rocks! I e-mailed them, they already e-mailed me back and are upgrading me to UPS shipping to get it tomorrow! I so need to get down there in the New Year – fabulous people!

Why, thank you! We are so touched when our service is appreciated. And isn’t this the spirit of the holiday season!

Tea Traditions

Our comment box at the Tea Room gets attention. Our card allows customers to post Comments, Compliments or Complaints and we read them all. Here are two wonderful compliments, both dated December 5, 2011:

I love this place!!! The food, tea, service is always great. Love the atmosphere. I’ve been coming here with my love since I’ve met her two years ago and we still come together till this day. I think we’re gonna make it a lifelong tradition.

The service is great, staff is always polite and pleasant. There is a very diverse selection of tes, one for everyone’s taste. The food is simply delicious and delightful. Nothing but great things about this place. Have been coming here for years, never had a single complaint.

Chai stories

Here’s a story that tells you how serious people are about their quest for a good Chai and that we’ve made the grade! One of our online customers has tried every Chai we have had – even White Chai when we had it. Recently, we took Kashmiri Green Chai off the retail list to make room for some new teas. He noticed and promptly sent in a query asking if we were planning to put it back. I immediately posted it back on the site and alerted him. He wrote back this morning:

In my quest for a good chai I’ve tasted so many brands before and none of them comes close to your teas. Silver Tips’ flavors are the most intense, the leaves are whole, and there’s a good balance of different aromas….Temple Chai is for me your flagship chai, it is grand. It is because of you guys that I’ve stopped drinking coffee.

He told us to keep concocting new infusions and new creations. We will. Thanks for making our day.

Here’s a recent Comment Card filled out by one of our customers a couple of weeks ago:

I have been to tea shops all over the UK and in the US, and also Babington’s in Rome, and yours is among the best! I wish I lived closer – this is my 2nd visit. You are wise to have men-friendly decor – nothing frilly!

High praise, indeed – thank you! The decor was a very conscious decision since we are right in the busy Main Street business district and hoped we would gain loyalty from local offices. And for men who get dragged in by their wives to accompany them, we are happy to report they often return of their own volition.

Highlights of our 12th Anniversary

What a great day that was yesterday! Thanks to our customers for making it a happy and busy day. We were full throughout the day – always a good thing for a restaurant. We gave away prizes, unveiled our gift baskets and new merchandise. Our quiche special was highly popular as were the petite pumpkin scones. We saw many friends, some who have been visiting us for all of our 12 years. I personally had the opportunity to see people I had not seen in a long while including some of my friends from NYNEX/Verizon where I worked many years ago. We collected food items as well as monetary donations for the Community Food Pantry and look forward to handing over our joint contributions to them next week. Thanks for making our special day so much fun. Enjoy the pictures – our customers and staff, all having a good time.

Community Giving – Nov. 12

As mentioned in my last blog, here are more details of our plans for November 12, which is both our 12th Anniversary and Customer Appreciation Day. A chief focus of this day is our plan to donate 10% of proceeds to the Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow Community Food Pantry.

The Food Pantry is located in the basement of the Christ Church parish hall (at the corner of Elizabeth and John Streets) and is very much a community effort. Volunteers come from the various churches in the area, temple, YMCA Kids’ Club and regular residents who want to share their time and resources. Last month alone, the pantry served 140 families. The first Thursday of every month, guests come and receive food of their choice from the pantry. This is not a pre-packaged bag of food but items each family can choose based on the number of people in their family. On the 3rd Thursday, fresh fruit and vegetables are distributed. The Food Pantry recently received a grant that will allow them to purchase chicken, meat and milk for distribution. In addition to distributing food to those who are able to come to the Pantry, they have now begun to deliver to homebound residents who benefit from the supplemental food.

Our effort on November 12 will be to give 10% of the day’s proceeds, have a donation canister near the cash register for those who wish to donate and to encourage our customers to bring unopened packaged and canned food goods which we will deliver to the Pantry on their behalf. Pantry donations can include beans, rice, tuna, cereal, pasta…..it is put to good use. Monetary donations allow the Pantry to purchase food at very low cost from the Food Bank for Westchester. For those who wish to write a check, they should be made out to “Community Food Pantry”. We can deliver them for you or you may mail direct to 43 South Broadway, c/o Christ Church, Tarrytown, NY 10591. In this season of giving thanks and sharing, please open your hearts, wallets and pantries to our community.

2011 Makaibari teas

Earlier this year, a prominent tea company, Special Teas, closed its doors. Some of its customers were left without a tea supplier and a few found their way to us. One such customer, Elise, quizzed me in detail about our Makaibari teas and pointed out that she had grown accustomed to Special Teas’ great service and tea selection. After a fairly lengthy conversation, she did place an order. Recently, she called back inquiring about 2011 Makaibari teas – were they in, were they any good, what did I recommend. Once again, she placed an order. Yesterday, we received a hand-written note in the mail:

I received my MAKAIBARI tea order and was very pleased with it. Thank you for allowing me to order over the telephone. The MAKAIBARI 2011 1st flush has a fullness and roundness that is particularly excellent. The flavor really surprised me because it is mellow, yet distinctively “rich” with muscatel qualities. All the teas you sent are very delicious and I am enjoying them.
