Mark your calendar – we will be closing on September 21 for a few weeks to complete the expansion. We apologize for the inconvenience in advance because we’re sure that there will be those that we catch by surprise and who will arrive at the door and be disappointed that we are closed.

We hope to be closed for 2 – 3 weeks but for anyone who has had any construction done, you know how these things go. October is typically busy for us so we are very motivated to get this completed speedily.

We will post the opening again prominently on our blog and site and on our Tea Room door. Thanks for your patience and patronage and see you again soon. We will continue to post stories on our blog during the expansion.

Hard to believe we are in September already. We are usually closed for the full Labor Day weekend and this year will be no exception. Traffic slows, families are busy taking their kids to school, colleges start back up again and we find that staying open serves no purpose. Already the mornings have turned crisp and cool. Thankfully, the days are still warm – today we expect the temperature to be 80 degrees. And it is gloriously sunny. One of our favorite customers sent us this quote this morning:

Steam rises from a cup of tea
and we are wrapped in history
inhaling ancient times and lands,
comfort of ages in our hands.

We will be closed September 5 – 7 and re-open on Tuesday, September 8.

Among the other coffee trends:

More coffee was being prepared at home.

The industry was overbuilt by about 20% over demand and would contract to match that demand.

Healthy and sustainable options and actions count.

We got our official Permit today from the Building Department of Tarrytown. This gives us the green signal to begin construction. We still have a ways to go before we close but this puts us on our way. First, we will clean up the store next door, put in a new restroom, install an additional HVAC unit, explore drop ceilings, work on the basement, do electrical wiring, put in plumbing…..you get the idea. We’ve taken down the separating wall and put up a false wall so we can still be open. Please bear with us. It is either this or close down!

For those of you who have visited our Tea Room, you will see some interesting changes when we’re done - one is a banquette against the wall. This will finally allow us to put tables together to expand our seats near the window. It is a familiar refrain in any restaurant. It doesn’t matter how many tables are free, customers always want the window table, even if they have to wait for it to be cleaned! I selected the fabric for the banquette today – must say that was fun. More posts to follow as construction gets under way.

“After hearing all the bad weather reports from the Makaibari Estate earlier this year, I didn’t know what to expect. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised when I sampled the first flush tea. And the second flush tea salvaged the season with great quality.

Thank you, Anupa. Another satisfied customer!”

Excellent news! And I hope the rest of our customers think so too.
